What to Wear on Your UTV Rental at Mill Creek Outfitters

Planning a UTV rental at Mill Creek Outfitters? The trails in the Boston Mountain District of the Ozark–St. Francis National Forest are stunning, but they’re real trails — dusty in dry weather, muddy after rain, and always worth being prepared for. You do not need to show up with a pile of specialized gear. A few common-sense choices about what you wear and bring will go a long way toward making your ride as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
What to Wear
Wear appropriate outdoor clothing. That means clothes you would be comfortable hiking or spending a day outside in — not your best outfit, and not beachwear. Here is what works well:
- Long sleeves and pants are a smart choice, especially on longer rides. They protect against sun, trail dust, brush, and the occasional branch. Lightweight, breathable fabrics work best in warm weather.
- Closed-toe shoes are required. Sandals, flip-flops, and open-toed footwear are not safe in the cab of a UTV. Sturdy sneakers, trail shoes, or boots all work well.
- Layers are worth considering if you are heading out early or on a longer full-day ride. The Ozarks can shift from warm to cool quickly, and a light jacket you can stow in the vehicle is easy to have on hand.
- Sun protection matters more than most people expect when you are spending hours outdoors. Sunscreen and a hat that fits comfortably are simple additions.
Helmets: Not Required
Mill Creek Outfitters does not require helmets for UTV rentals, and we do not supply them. Arkansas does not have a helmet law for UTV riders. If you own a helmet and prefer to wear one, you are welcome to bring it — but it is entirely your call.
What you will be riding in — the Kawasaki KRX 1000 — is built with a full roll cage and standard safety features. On guided tours, your guide is CPR and First Aid certified and carries a first aid kit and recovery tools.
Eyewear: Optional, Available On-Site
Eyewear is optional — not required. That said, the trails can be dusty and the terrain kicks up debris, so many riders prefer something on their eyes for comfort. If you want goggles or sunglasses and do not have your own, we sell both in the office.
What to Bring in the Vehicle
Beyond what you wear, a few things consistently make the ride better:
- Water — bring more than you think you need, especially in summer. The Ozarks in July and August can be hot, and you will be moving and exposed to the sun for several hours.
- Snacks and a small pack for longer rides. The UTVs have storage, but you are responsible for what you bring.
- Your phone, fully charged. Some trail areas have limited cell coverage. Download offline maps before you leave if you plan to navigate, and let someone know your planned route and return time.
Pairing Your Ride with a Hike?
Many guests at Mill Creek combine a UTV rental with time on the hiking trails nearby. If that is your plan, consider packing a separate pair of lighter hiking shoes. Your riding footwear will work, but a trail shoe makes a real difference once you are on foot over longer distances.
The Short Version
Outdoor clothing, closed-toe shoes, water, and a charged phone. That covers the essentials. We will take care of the rest — including the Kawasaki KRX 1000 and access to some of the best trails in the Ozarks, right from our property.
